| LAN (Local Area Network) is used in a single
location environment like the office your work in, typically in a client-server
configuration. Networks provide File and Print services, Intranets, E-mail, Database and
other applications and information for local users to share. Example: A corporation has an office or offices in a one building. |
WAN (Wide Area Network) multiple LANs networked
across large geographic areas. WANs provide connectivity between offices in different
locations so that one large network is formed allowing users to share information and
services from different sites. Today, using the Internet is an option. Example: A corporation has locations in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg. |
